Well, most of the time my new laptop works fine with little issues. It's just that recently, I decided to install Avira AntiVir on it since I heard that it was pretty good compared to most freeware virus scanners.

Note that I haven't installed any anti-virus software before, but I do have MalwareBytes installed, and I hardly use it to connect to the Internet.

During installation, it threw a BSoD at me, and after restarting, I found that Avira was installed, but it was unable to initialize anything. I had previously tried to install Avira with worse results, in one case, I wasn't even able to boot into safe mode, which made repairing it necessary.

Using nirsoft's BlueScreenView, I was able to obtain the following information:

Dump File:Mini120209-01.dmp
Crash Time:12/2/2009 10:28:18 AM
Bug Check String:UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
Bug Check Code:0x1000007f

Parameter 2:0x80042000

Product Name:Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
Company:Microsoft Corporation
File Version:5.1.2600.3023 (xpsp_sp2_qfe.061030-0020)

and the offending flaw is:

Filename : avipbb.sys
Address In Stack : avipbb.sys+12b48

can anyone tell me why is avira causing this problem? I have re-downloaded the installer many times, only to have the same results.

Check that out, seems interesting.

If it does not work, try increasing your virtual memory.

the problem has nothing to do with the thread in the link provided. Remember that this is a new install of Avira, not an upgrade from a previous version.

And I have removed all traces of Avira after I rebooted yesterday, prior to making my post. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Throw your dump log to the avira dev team. Maybe they know what's going on.

I'm not sure, but I think it's either from a corrupt driver or bad hardware.

You could also run some hardware diagnostics. UBCD is a nice collection for computers with intel/pentium.

Reading Avira's documentation to see if your hardware/OS is supported might solve this.

Avira is known for having driver conflicts with other software, I've ran into this before, Forget Avira and use another A/V like McAfee or norton, If your looking for free then use Avg.
