No offense meant to Lemon Demon for the title...I love that song.

In my work study I'm doing at my local community college my professor had me look at the differences between XP and Vista. I thought some of you would enjoy looking at the report that came out of that project.

http://www.mediaf. . .mztmx2txyq

it's about 14 pages long, and fairly thorough. Though this is actually the start of a short E-book I'm in the process of writing. Essentially just a series of 15 - 20 articles and reports I've written that pertain to computers, the internet, and security.

I take a couple of cheap shots at Windows and Internet Explorer in there as well(I'm a Linux and Mozilla man by nature) so be warned.

Seems to me Windows is trying to compete with MAC with the stylish things... But They won't pass MAC, not soon if they do. But vista looks decent but I'm still going to wait for some service packs come out before purchasing this software... So when I get it it's fully bug free.

But great information your showing here. Keep it up.Smile

That's all Vista is good for right now... eye candy. There's still the problem of driver issues and application compatibility issues (VS 2005 won't even run correctly under Vista!). I have to agree with what was said earlier... I'm waiting for the service packs, then I might give it another try. Or, hopefully, they've learned what a pain in the ass Vista can be, and they'll correct it in Longhorn Server. Hopefully.

I purchased Vista ultimate not too long ago for my new custom built computer. I must say, i quite enjoy it once you get around the hogging of system resources, driver issues, and other bugs... Although I havn't found all that many things that don't work great yet.

I mainly purchased Vista for the eye candy. I'm a sucker for that stuff Smile, so in most ways, i think it's great Smile

But you know you can easily custom XP to make it look 100 times better than vista ever will... Wink

In the back of my report/paper type thing I have a list of links to dozens of different programs and software type things to make XP vista-ish.

There is something that didn't get into the report, but I think is worth noting. It is that when it originally shipped Vista didn't support Internet Explorer in the release version(at least not with all hardware for some reason). I did that report mostly with the beta versions, but when we installed the release version we weren't able to get IE 7 working, and ultimately just used Mozilla. I think it was only 2-3 days before a patch came out to fix that...but it's still got to be a huge embarrassment for Microsoft.

I agree with what several of you said...wait to buy it. I think it's nice, and I love the new start menu design, but the OS is not worth the problems it has right now. I'll probably wait at least until next year to get a copy of it....by then they should have worked out most of the bugs in it(I hope).

It's a good operating system, though, I think Microsoft actually did a good job of looking at what people wanted and what people liked in a lot of the open source projects and in MACs and integrated it into their system. Is this stealing? You could say that...but isn't freedom of ideas what we're all about here anyway?(That statement isn't meant to be pro or con for any side of the Windows/MAC/Linux/etc issue)

I'm glad to see some positive thoughts here. Thanks for reading it everyone that did, and I'll see about getting some more stuff up some time.

that's al great and all.os's that look good, and nothing else basicly like vista...but...
the puropose of computer systems is not what it should be anymore.
winblows will always be a crappy commercial product,
with no real intentions, working towards end users online security.
it you have a rotten fundation, you cannot build a solid structure on that!
it is all about the money.any self repecting company,
that does buisness online, should not install windows, simple as that.
their data is just NOT safe.
an os should never be about the looks.that comes in last place.
well,should come in last place.
microsoft will always, provide us with full of holes systems,
also, they mostly buy 3rd party software. Grin
and claim it's theirs
open source has the future, microsoft hasn't.they depand on mostly
stupid, computer illiterate end users, who most likely, only are able,
to double click,and auto run cd's :S

well that's what people want. everyone even "hackers"

computers are a big part of our life and you shouldn't have to be an expert to use one.

windows isn't that insecure if you know what you're doing windows can be as secure as any linux box, also vista has a lot more than eye candy it's foundations aren't as rotten as they were, sure it'll be sometime until it gets as stable as xp,

and i really think that the computer as we know it, something that we buy in parts and setup at home is going to be less common with time..

"common" people will have evolved versions of media centers or consoles that do "common" tasks, voip, p2p chats, email, web browsing, games etc..

vista will probably be the last OS where microsoft is still dominant..

as with media centers linux and mac os are more than capable of fighting it

not true "hackers" want good OS not crappy stuff. mainly they want something you can configure to their likes and practice programming skills.

computers are a big part of our life and you shouldn't have to be an expert to use one.

windows is way behind in this. macs are way easier to use and have always lead the way. many linux distros are way easier to use for non-experts that windows. and whats better, is that windows forces you tto stay non-expert while linux allows you to grow and use features for experts.

windows isn't that insecure if you know what you're doing windows can be as secure as any linux box,
nothing is completly secure but windows is less secure than most linux distros and macs even if "you know what youre doing"

also vista has a lot more than eye candy
not really...

it's foundations aren't as rotten as they were, sure it'll be sometime until it gets as stable as xp,
last time i checked (today) xp wasnt stable at all

I got Vista premium not long after it came out and i swear it has got worse with updates! I have got so annoyed with it i have found my self using Linux ELive all the time now Smile Which is awsome! Linux FTW!

So how would i describe Vista?

Its like dressing up dung with a posh suite and bow tie, it looks nice on the outside but underneath it is a smelly, dirty unbearable mess.

Hehe Smile Just like most people said its just about the eye candy which is why i bought it really Smile But it is a whole lot worse that i thought it was going to be Sad Oh well!
