250gb sata2 16mb cache hard drive
ATI radeon X1800 graphics card, if you can afford the X1900, even better
Intel pentium E6600 processor, if you can afford a X6800 or so... good for you, but they're really not cost effective.
2x 1GB 533MGz RAM (corsair or kingston, 533MHz because the E6600 has an FSB of 1066)
16 speed DVD burner
19" flat screen
Saitek Eclipse 2 Illuminated Keyboard
Logitech G5 Gaming-Grade Laser Mouse
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard <-- has dual PCI-E slots. But really any board which supports core 2 duo, sata and PCI-E
Case is up to you..

Of course others will argue with this, but I recently built something similair to this and it kicks ass. I'm being told that that PC averages over 100FPS in CS:S and that you won't notice anything even if installing software while playing games.

Edit: oh and some if you need a wireless adapter, then a standard PCI card from belkin works wonders.

I recomend you don't cut corners with the case. I decided to save money on the case and the power button broke the very first time I pressed it. Being too lazy to send it back for a refund I decided to wire the reset button to be the power button and the actual power button doing nothing.

Edit: oh and some decent speakers and a decent headset. The board I suggested had 2.1 surround sound output as well as your standard stuff.
Or get a PCI card with better surround sound, whatever.

That was one of the best posts I've seen on this site haha.

mrdj, look up each component and work around your budget. If you could specify that it would be helpful

Building yourself, you could get a pretty sweet PC out of that!

I suggest you contact whiteacid and hope he is helpful with more information. If not read the articles on this site about building the PC and see what you need to buy. Weigh up the products and prices.

uhm... 1k USD? ok, scrap what I wrote... a few months ago I spend around £930 on that, sure it's gone down now, but not by that much.

uhm.... if you have $1000 I suggest you save up until you have more. I wouldn't buy a new (gaming) PC unless it's at least got the E6600 processor, and if you get that processor you don't want to waste it by getting a crap graphics card or too little ram or a shitty hdd. Soo... save up.

Well dual processor cores isn't important for gaming. When you want ONE application to run good (The game) you want ONE processor core to deal with it, instead of using one of two cores for the game (if you're not running other applications in the background)... Pfft

Wireless mouse SUCKS!! You can game with a wireless, if it's 2000dpi or not. It's not as good as the "notwireless mouse" Don't get a optical, but laser like G5, or some razer.

I know what i'm talking about, a friend of mine "killersmeelf" have played in the CPL in Soa when he was like 19 or something.

Sry, but wireless is no good.

One process can use both threads. It's split of at the thread level, not the process level.

If you do build your own computer I suggest using NewEgg or TigerDirect for your parts and accessories. Good luck!
