when did the problem start?

i still recommend trying a boot disc. if you have your windows xp disc, i believe you can use that as a boot disc, but if it's a virus that's causing it you might get the same problem, so i'd still recommend using a linux boot disc because a different OS might not be effected by the virus.

theres so many things that could cause this.

Freezing can be caused by many things, such as low system memory, or even a virus/piece of software that sucks it all up. try to find out whats causing it first (task manager might help you with this).

If its just software and stuff, just remove the bad stuff you dont want or buy more RAM.

If its something worse, im afraid i cant help you Sad

If your not to paranoid you could post all the process running in task manager. Or at least anything using more than 3% cpu and 60Mb of ram. Though its a bad sign if anything you didn't start directly actually uses that much.

hi guys
im a bit of n00b, but here goes my 5 cents.
have u tried starting up in safe mode???
to start up in safe mode, turn on ur pc, and after POST, but just before the windows logo comes up, press f8.
a menu should come up, where u will choose to start in safe mode.
once ur in a dialog box pops up, select yes.
now see if the pc still freezes.
if itdoesnt, have a look at ur recently installed programs, and eliminate any u dont need.
u should also run msconfig to see which programs are starting up with windows. u might have too many "heavy " programs loading at startup, which may cause ur pc to freeze if u have little ram.
hope this helped Wink

What about memory usage? Click performance tab in task manager, the box with memory and a bar is how much you use, and the box physical memory has the total memory you can use. If you use less than you have available your system shouldn't be freezing, it might be a virus.

Well, if you know what your doing you might be able to reinstall windows without deleting the existing files. I think there is an option to install over the old installation and keeping the file structure intact. But you'd still need to trust windows to do that with nothing going wrong....

have you tryed starting you computer in safe mode to start your computer with only the basic stuff and running a scan.

or you a diffrent computer and get pc docter im not at my house so i cant specify where and do a the malware thing and submite it for pros to see what the problem is. but you may need to pay for it tho.

or you may have a hardware problem. start in safe mode and reinstall drivers

also try looking it up on maxamumpc.com or pcmagazine.com
