Like someone said, at the end of the day ur a hacker. I believe in staying true to ur hacking friends because you all are looking for the same answer.

Doesnt matter what hat colour you are because in the end its your
decision whether you destroy a network or something else.

Yes Watcher. Staying true is a vital part of the hacking world. I agree with you there. I do not agree however in the ideals that some Black hats take on. That is all. But YES you are correct that a hacker is a hacker is a hacker.

why does it all have to be categorised?
it's like some kind of racism Smile gee
anyway, i don't understand what you're argueing about but in my opinion there is a very big difference between people who test sites on safety and people who hack sites for their own pleasure. it's like hacking/cracking...
me myself (as far as i can be called a hacker that is) try to learn how to hack not to harm people. I try to learn it because I don't want myself to be backstabbed. it's like learning karate or some other defencesport. normally (in most cases) you learn these sports to protect yourself IF some other (bad) dude tries to harm you...
what kind of color of hat do I have to wear than? Wink
anyway, hack for fun guys... and with fun, I don't mean only fun for yourself...
*dunno who said it, but hacking for political reasons, it's not because you are fe against jews everybody has to be against jews... or not because you're a socialst everybody has to be one...*

Okay, this thread has gotten far off topic. So, I'm going to go back, answer the inital question, and then give my 2 cents on the whole 'hat' concept.

To answer the inital question: The course in question is called Certified Ethical Hacker (abbreviated to CEH). This course is crap, don't take it. If you must get a security cert, shoot for CISSP. And it is *not* sponsored by Cisco in any way.

About the hats: The whole concept of hats is ridiculous and stupid. Either you hack or you don't.

BTW, WaTcHeR, interesting how you term yourself a blackhat, and yet your sig is from www.blackhat.com, which is a whitehat site. Wink I'm not trying to start anything by say this, just pointing it out. Maybe you need to reconsider some things?

But hats are retarded. The people who work for companies and the like, they're still hackers, they just have a different motivation that us ('us' used loosley here). At some point in ones life (which I have not yet reached), one must finish school, and get a real job. Typically, the job that you get is releated to your interests as a teenager. So, hackers turn to the security industry, and become consultants. I'll probably end up walking that path as well.

Still, that does not mean that I agree with every decision that the industry makes. The virus hype, the scare about the latest exploit, the demonization of hackers. All these things are not true, and the industry knows it. So, why do they do it? Money. Money drives the world, like it or not. The really galling part is that many security consultants were former hackers. Thats why so many 'blackhats' (aka sceners), dislike them. But not all the consultants are like that. You can stil see route (Mike Schiffman, the author of Firewalk and libnet) in *phrack, and joeywee in *darknet.

Hats are meaningless classifications that were invented to tear the community apart. They're stupid and meaningless. Either you hack or you don't. All hackers ultimatly want the same things: knowledge and access. Don't even try to deny it. The thirst for knowledge is what drives us, and we want access to that knwoledge, wether it may come in the source of a *nix man page, an internal telco document, or some propriatary source code.

So, what about the people who do damage? I think that we could agree here, that with few exceptions, many of those 'hackers' are actually script kiddies. Real hackers know that damaging a computer will get you noticed, and you'll lose the access. They also know that if you do damage a computer, it furthers the bad reputation that hackers already have.

Forget the hats. Just hack.

It's the website labelling themselfs with the title Blackhat, and if they understand what the term means then im sure they will realise that they are truly of the whitehat foundation.

Think:

your question is all about this:
use it and say the truth
or just use it as you as your worst beast

Vulnerabilities, exploits, whatever..
You need to understand both sides to talk about them or the best thing you saw from them and their vantages as their weaknesses.

Then define equally both sides so everyone can understand their meaning and why do you .hack

There are many ways of life's, or living things..

Everything it's relative; Everything Depends on Everything.

WaTcHeR:
Say why if you know it..

Still, its a security industry thing. And they know that they're 'whitehat'. Blackhat Inc is one of the leading companies in the security industry. Hell, they even sponsored the Stealing the Network series.

I cant say that i agree with this, in my own opinion, you need white hats to stop exploits other wise, it would be no fun. I am a network tech, and i have told my co-workers that, as we get smarter, and block more things, so do the people trying to get around/in to stuff.
