Alright, some of you know I currently have a new site in the works... And I have some pretty major plans with this new site but I would like to figure out what some people think..

I will not disclose any of my current features seing as I do not want them stolen before my site is online...

What I would like from you guys is the following...

What do you like in a web site?

What makes you stay at a web site?

Are there some really cool features in some websites you like that you would love to do but do not have the time / knowledge to create or plain ass do not have any where to use it?

Are there some really cool features that you have never seen before but would love to see it integrated into a website?

How do you feel about the looks of a web site?

What kind colors do you like on a web site? Dark, Light, etc...

Do you like customization?

Do you like changes?

Do you like to have your choice as to where things are located on a site? Such as the layout of certain pages / all pages / etc...

Do you ever use RSS?

Do you like user based sites? Such as users basically run the site, something kinda like HBH.. The users of HBH basically power it and keep it going..

Do you like ranking?

Would you like ranking if it was better set? Such as a way where people would not be arguing / fighting over who they are better then on a site?

These are just a few examples I am looking for...

Please take your time if you have the time, or just throw some stuff out.

I feel as though I have alot of good ideas and a lot of people love my ideas but I do have people that do not like some of my ideas but I never really get anyone telling me what they would like....

A website cannot be as good as one wants it unless that person expresses what he wants... And this goes for just about anything in life..

So please reply if you have the time. I am totally open to anything and everything. If something was already said, go ahead and say it again. It just lets me know that there are more people that feel the same about something and more likely to create it..

I think one of the things that keeps me at a site most of all is the community. being able to have something to do at all times like that.

Customization is great too....because it always leaves room to be doing things to.

I think the best thing you can do for your site to gain and keep members is provide multiple mediums for communicating, staying active, etc. The challenges here are great, but you do run into a point were you slow down on them, its the forums and shoutbox that keep things going. along with articles to read. incorporating those things in would be good, but something better would be having some sort of working code that all members can edit....i realize its opened to destruction and such so perhaps require a certain ranking or time on the site, but allow members to work together like that...or add a game that people can play, and better yet make it interactive. something like the old games of past Kings of Chaos and such (btw, i still play that clickzor my link Smile http://www.kingso. . .d=4nc3qidx).....
those things keep people.

Alright, you named off some stuff we already have planned out Smile

I already have a lot of great features that are partially planned out and one that is in development. Think of MSN Messenger Pfft

We also plan on doing a lot of things with templating and what not...

We will allow our members to edit / add color schemes.. Create there own CSS files, templates, and images for the site that will all be automated and not require any administration.

We plan on basically whipping out the whole shoutbox thing... If you have ever noticed a shoutbox its basically a chat room but slower... We will have a live ajax chat along with private live chats and what not..

On top of this we will basically be removing the whole Private Message type of system you see in a lot of sites.
We are replacing this with live / up to date emails.

Each member of the site will receive a 2 gig email address that is worked into the site.

So hopefully I didnt spill to much of some of the good stuff, but just a little idea of some of the things we have so far Smile

I have also thought about adding a type of RPG type of game on the site... It will basically be worked into several pages.. The main genre of the site is programming.. So let your mind wonder on that one Smile Cause if the idea does go into effect it will be a surprised but it wont be no gay surprise..

We also have some pretty major plans for a peice of software that we may build...

This peice of software will mainly be used by members at first but hopefully it will be popular enough to sell and give out free to active members..

This software basically combines everything you ever wanted in a text editor...

Some examples of what this peice of software will do...

CVS / SVN with live chat and file chat...
Basically you can talk with people that are working on the same file as you are... or you can talk to everyone on the server...

You can watch people edit files in real time and talk personally with this person or in a group, say if there were 5 people working on the same file we could all see who is doing what and talk with them...

VoIP... Talk with your voice to your team or certain developers while you are working...

Webcam: spy on your team Smile

and much more...

I have always been a solo worker... I have always enjoyed working by myself.. But recently I started doing some voluntary work for someone locally as a 2 person team... And I found this to be really helpfull..

But you are working on a site and it is really hard to keep track of everything... You have to talk with your developers to see why they changed somthing or if they are going to change something whitch could usually be IRC / IM or talking with someone via voice such as ventrilo or teamspeak. Just all these things add up and you could be using multiple applications where you could only be using 1...

With this 1 application it will be like you are all in the same room working on a project live...

I really suck at explaining stuff but I am sure you get the idea..

I have talked with a friend of mine, he is a C++ programmer and I came out of no where and he loved the idea and thought it would have no problem going commercial..

seeing as I had looked for quite some time and never seen all these types of things that would be awesome in a text editor for programmers.

And I am not one to really want to buy something, and if I had all the ideas I have in a single program I would spit out an easy $500+ if i had the money for it. But skarecrow being skarecrow would probably give it out easily $10 for a lifetime license. lol

I just have one word for this: Awesome! Grin

Two things that make me like sites are changes and activity.
I want things to happen. I want to read something new when I log in. I want to meet other people, not just sit there staring on the same old page over and over again.

By the way, one feature that I think many people would appreciate is an online DES cracker Wink

The main focus of the site is Programming...

I will deal with security and what not but probally will not be affiliated with hacking sites such as HBH, EG, HTS, etc... It just attracts to many people I do not want, if you know what I mean..

Although, Pfft I could disguise it...

Create a huge database, like 100 gig db that has a combination of MD5 / DES / SHA1 hashes and what not and have it so people can check wether or not there password is that safe...

Seing your password tested against such a huge database can really boost someones confidence on a good password...

So we will see about that. Smile

sounds like you've got some big ideas for your site an by what your saying your site will most defently be a big one! lol the type of sites i like are things like www.live.com not for any special reason as such but just coz you can customise it to your needs you can get a gadget an put it anywere you want you can creat a new tab an just click one thing at the top of the site an be switched to the next page no loading time as such, and they need to be "Pretty" lol i love a site with a unique color scheme

The color scheme may or may not be so unique by default, I will probally leave that up to the members..

We also plan on having several different front ends to the site including...

Telnet, Ajax, and actual software

i think this site is gonna be awesome when you release it Smile the sort of things i like in sites is ones that actively involve users e.g. programming challenges and open source development, not challenges. will you have any open source projects released?

Mother fucker. I spent about 15 minutes filling this 'form' out then I hit the back button on my keyboard.

I'm actually going to go through the effort of doing it again because this site has great potential.

What do you like in a web site?
Communication. Once I'm done with learning I like to just communicate with others who share an interest in the same thing I do.

What makes you stay at a web site?
Activity. If the forums are active and articles are constantly being published, I will always have something to do

Are there some really cool features in some websites you like that you would love to do but do not have the time / knowledge to create or plain ass do not have any where to use it?
Videos! Lots of educational video's! It makes topics that are boring to read fun. Reading is always up to interpretation.. but visual lessons are to the point and completely accurate.

Are there some really cool features that you have never seen before but would love to see it integrated into a website?
Yeah but I'm afraid this doesn't go public Wink

I have one idea for you, contact me on MSN.

How do you feel about the looks of a web site?
I feel it's very important. It needs to be aesthetically pleasing and allows me to spend my average of 5 hours online on it! I use HBH defaults theme but not to keen on the others. Consistency is another key factor. Such as the EG forums are a different color scheme to the site. That sucks royally.

What kind colors do you like on a web site? Dark, Light, etc...
Pastel? Completely calm and easy on the eye.

Do you like customization?
To a certain extent. No more than default profiles. Such as an about me,sig, avatar etc etc.

Although my XP is customized COMPLETELY.

Do you like changes?
As long as they're not too sudden

Do you like to have your choice as to where things are located on a site? Such as the layout of certain pages / all pages / etc...
Nope, the admin decides where is best!

Do you ever use RSS?
Nopeee

Do you like user based sites? Such as users basically run the site, something kinda like HBH.. The users of HBH basically power it and keep it going..
I think this is why I've stayed here so long. It allows me to get involved with something I'm interested in and I think it would be a major blow if you didn't include this.

Do you like ranking?
I like rewards/awards/recognition but feel like a ranking system is slightly inaccurate as there is a vast amount of people on this site far more skilled than I but much lower down in the ranks.

Would you like ranking if it was better set? Such as a way where people would not be arguing / fighting over who they are better then on a site?
I read a good post by tacurrom on some gay site the other day, saying it should be like an 'award' or 'certificate' if you were to complete a set task. Rather than points. Thus the user gets to feel the satisfaction and achievement without the reminder he/she is still 500 members from the top.

It just lets me know that there are more people that feel the same about something and more likely to create it..[/quote]

Wow dude this site will be awesome Smile. First of all like flash said some customization is nice. Id like to have a dark theme. A site driven by users is a site that does well. Its the reason why people love hbh so much they get to contribute to the community and feel like a part of it not just a watcher. One thing i do not like is a ranking system. They tend to evolve into huge egos an elitists. I think that you should have challenges but they should be purely for learning. That way ppl dont simply flame someone or ignoring them because they only have a few points or have a low rank *points at his own 270 pts Pfft*. i cant wait for this site to come out. Smile

Well the ranking system wouldnt be something that shows how great you are on something... Really it would be like cash. You get points for certain things you do and you can spend them points on software we write or gain extra priveleges on the site and other cool things, like a possible 8 gig upgrade on your email account threw WC. But it is something that isn't like "hey look at me I have more money then you there for I am better then you", there will be alot of steps in place to prevent people from this kinda shit.

Ok if your going to do it like that why not give points for controbutions to the site. Like 5 pts for an article 10 for a bug ect.

The ranking system already has some thought behind it, we are not sure if we will be using one though. But some where we will have some type of ranking system wether it be behind the scenes or what not. People will basically receive shit unexpectadly, this hopefully would give the members a reason to contribute more to the site. The more they do the closer they get to getting something unexpectadly...

But I do not want a list of things to give points out for. No more about the ranking system, the fact is out that there might be one, but I need no more input on that.

Other ideas would be great, thanks!
