as a volunteer for the Ubuntu support channel i have to reply to this because i know alot about this topic Pfft. When i first started Ubuntu i had the same problem.

1) check and make sure your sound settings are on alsa mixer and make sure its not muted
2) check your restricted drivers and make sure its enabled
3) If all that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin

i had a bad day that time, so i forgot to ask him to just use the "lspci" command.

good thing he found it out himself.

You're an idiot.

Also the command is alsaconf, but that only tends to resolv the machine configuring the wrong device at boot time.

Didn't have time to rea the whole thread but apt-cache search (chipset) might throw up something useful, else #ubuntu

I'm an idiot? I said the exact thing the people that do support for Ubuntu would have said. If you don't believe me go find out for yourself.

as i have a hda_intel_sound chip too and i had to put a 'model=toshiba' in my sound,
i suggest, you try that too!
edit '/etc/modprobe.d/sound' and try either 'model=toshiba', 'model=acer' or 'model=3stack', reboot and you should be fine to go! if none of the above work, put try putting them to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, you should have a line that looks like this: 'options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba'!
if not, there is always #alsa on freenode, where you can ask!
hope, that helps!

oh, and don't get confused by the models, i don't have a toshiba, but it works! Wink

/edit// reading all the post might have helped, never saw, that he solved the prob already!

Maybe, but the "I'm a volunteer in #ubuntu on freenode"

That's like saying you fuck your sister regularly, we're not impressed.

Fact is ubuntu is a pretty useless distro for all but a few select purposes, and trying to fix that is pointless.

Get a proper distro.

Also, it's worth noting that my asus laptop(with intel and toshiba hardware) worked off the bat with alsa and debian.

Debian, Slack, Gentoo, Mandriva even.

Ubuntu teaches you bad habits.

Bonus points for LFS.

Also don't discount other unices and derivitives (BSD, Solaris, i used to have an SCO machine too)
