Include PHP in the programming languages, and I may be interested, depending upon what the challenge is.

If I remember correctly there was a poll a while back about what type of programming challenge HBH should have...offensive security, defensive security, etc. Of course it never really got off the ground though.

IMO a DBMS is waaay overdone and it's not even hard to code...I mean just download phpmyadmin for god's sake.

I really like the idea of a defensive or (preferably) offensive security app. I mean this is a hacking site...right...

well, I think PHP, Python, Perl, and C++ can be included into this competition. Anyone else have any languages in particular that they want to use?

PHP is the obvious choice for that challenge. I'm also thinking you should scrap it. You've just given us all a fair amount of time in which to complete it and gain maximum points for time completion.

Perhaps we should actually think about the entire lot before even considering telling anybody about it.

OK, you're right.. I've revealed too much too early for this one to really be a challenge.
I'm working at something right now, and HBH will have the final product any day between 14 November 2010 and 20 November 2010.
I'm also giving you one single tip:
--- Be here when the challenge is revealed if you want to win this one Wink

Important: I need "volunteers" to be judges for Python, C, and C++, and PHP code
I can be the judge for VB, VC, C++ and Pascal. (I'm not that much of a guru in Python or php yet)

And also a request for the admins
Can you put this on the site's start page? so people would know that there will be a programming challenge. Here goes the text:
Like THIS:

(click to open, then click to zoom)

NEW Special Programming Challenge
Participation is Free For All HBH members

Challenge will be revealed between 14 Nov 2010 and 20 Nov 2010

1. You will have to design and code an application.

2. You will find out what the application would have to do, and all the details, when the challenge will be revealed.

3. Each application will get a score based on a scoreboard that will be revealed with the challenge

4. Based on your application's score, you will get:
1st place: 150 HBH Points
2nd place: 100 HBH Points
3rd place: 50 HBH Points

Remember: The Challenge will be time-based also, so if you want to win this one, you will have to be here when it will be revealed.
P.S. Nobody but I (TommyCat) will know when the Challenge will be revealed, nor the Challenge itself, so no cheating will be possible.

Thank You

I've talked this over with two potential judges, so far, we've narrowed it down to PHP, Python, Perl and C++.

That's one. But one issue is concerning the time limit, since one of the judges isn't very clear on how we can judge it, since in his opinion, you can write an application to do the same task in several different ways that the runtime itself does not matter.

The other judge, on the other hand, think that we should aim for cross-platform compatibility. He also thinks that contestants should submit their submissions in code form, and he can help compile it.

Keep in mind that he's wary of running it inside a VM, since he's pretty sure that some coders might make multi-threaded programs that will strain his PC.

Anything else you have in mind, Tommy?

I've been trying to contact the OP, since this was his idea and all, but it seems that he hasn't logged on to HBH lately.

I might try contacting him again to straighten out the rules and discuss any potential judges and work out the details.

still in the planning stage, you haven't missed anything yet. I really wish the OP would log on and take this seriously.

I've been trying to contact TommyCat by email, IM and PMs, but it seems that he's gone awol for a while. I might proceed with the competition, but I still have to re-think about some details on the rules.

hmm, I'm afraid for now I'm limiting it to Python, Perl and PHP. Also,
I've decided to make it a crsf worm for this competition.

maybe I'll include pascal on the next competition. Right now, I'm still waiting for TommyCat to get back to me with the competition. It's like he's gone for sometime now.

I've tried contacting him on HBH, Email and IM. No reply. I think we can go ahead with this, so firstly, all submissions are done in source code form.

I'm still trying to get hold of some judges, and I'm tired after a day at work. And I'm still trying to get TommyCat, but he's putting on one heck of a disappearing act.

I can, but I'm in the office atm. I think TommyCat's plans are good enough, I'm just going to see if there is any changes I'm going to make.

And you better practice your music well dammit.
