I got a new Sony Vaio laptop about a month ago, but I recently got this problem with my hard drive. I installed Ubuntu a while back, but deleted it. I used less than 100 GB, I know that for sure. However, when I click on My Computer, it says I have 308 GB of total Hard Drive Space. This computer has a 500 GB HDD, so where could that almost 200 GB have gone? Is there a way I can fix it? I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows and erasing all my files, since I have VERY important stuff on it.

Simple answer.

Just get any bootable medium, USB stick/CD.
Put on a live linux distribution on it or some other form of bootable disk partitioning software (IE Linux live CD/USB Stick or Hirens Boot CD) and then, either, delete the unused partitions, then reallocate the space to either a new drive as NTFS or glue it back on to your "main" Windows logical partition.

Depending what version of Windows this is, if it is Vista/7, there will also be a 200MB partition that shouldn't be messed with.

I also agree with MoshBat entirely on this one, the copout of "Reinstall Windows" is:
1. A waste of time for the OP if they had even bothered to read his post properly.
2. Pointless, when you can simply run a partitioning utility and not have to fuck around backing up and reinstalling in the first place.

Try opening up your run box (Windows Key + R), typing "diskmgmt.msc", and pressing return.

You should see all your drives, and when you click on an individual one, you will be able to see each of its partitions. If there is unallocated space, it will show up here as well (if you're using Vista or newer, you will also have the option of extending one of your other partitions into this space by right clicking on it).

Good bit of advice here if you have Windows Vista/7

You'll need to convert the discs to dynamic discs to be able to do the above but that takes seconds. And tbh - unless you have a very specific setup you've nothing to worry about when doing the conversion.

This also saves messing about with a live OS boot. But if you have XP or something else then give Gparted a try - nice GUI partition editor (which can also be dangerous if you do the wrong thing though so be carefull Smile )

Yes.

Take a fucking joke man. I know he had no need to reinstall windows I was just referring to his post about losing all his "VERY important stuff". That is most likely just porn and old pics of an ex girlfriend anyway.

EDIT: "there is a time and a place for being a worthless cunt."
With you around, and all your juicy knowledge every time is a good time to be a worthless cunt.
