My experience from group coding competitions on hackig sites is that it seldom works -.-

I still say it would be worth at least one attempt.

Debugging is what programmers do to beta software to make it take up more room on your hard drive if it is running too efficiently.

Both are worth a try, really... Solo competitions and team competitions can both be very enjoyable. What kind of things would you two (or anyone else) like to see as the subject for a competition, whether solo or team?

I'd really like to see a solo coding competition, where you can use any language you want to create a special kind of application (clearly defined in the rules - not just 'code a useful application' but rather 'code a HTTP server', 'code a md5 cracker' or something like that).

That'd be great

NOTE: Perhaps not too advanced stuff, since that'd prevent beginners from participating B)

Code golfing Smile of course perl and php one-liners not allowed. Then for instance get some code like in lisp or pseudo code, and people would have to rewrite in language of their choice, and the fastest/most efficient code would win( this could also contain scoring of the code by judges )

http://www.ecoo.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=61 (highschool competitions I've participated in)

http://plg1.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~acm00/ (contests the club I'm in runs)

http://code.google.com/codejam/contest

They primarily deal with applying creativity and logic to solving problems. The problems are created specifically to be difficult, interesting and unique problems (not so much the highschool one). Solutions are rarely standalone applications that someone would use. It's supposed to improve your problem solving ability and be fun to code.

So the idea is that for a particular problem the 'problem data' is given to the user. (along with sample input and output) The user creates a program that will turn the problem data into the answer.. the user submits the answer data to the server and the answer data is graded. The ranking is determined by correctness of the data first and the time of the submission second. The user would be penalized for submitting subsequent answers.

Formatting is usually strict.. i.e. the output must be exactly the same format, same case, etc.

edit: typo

Now I'm know these seldom work, but the idea is still great. Why not get a competition where either:

1) The community can join together to form teams. Each team then makes a website that is vulnerable to something. One site per team. The sites need to be done and approved by a certain date to keep things moving along. Then allow the teams to try and get into the other teams' sites. So you get a hacking competition that (sort of) mimics things that you would really find. To make it more realistic, we could have the teams try to make their site as secure as possible, so that there are no pre-programmed holes.

2) The admins create a site and let the community have its way with it. Same basic principles as number one, but this way would be easier to keep on a strict timeline, and teams wouldn't have to be organized. It would be a free-for-all and the people could band together if they wanted.

The 'scoring' could be sort of like the rooting competitions where you place your (team) name in a text file, or something. The team that gets into the most sites wins. This could be fun, or it could suck, depending on how it is run or structured. What do you guys think?

Number one will be just like the DMZ web wars, but number two is very interesting Grin

The only problem I foresee is servers.

here are some ideas i had

1) some advanced algoritms
2) programs set to achieve a certain outcome
3) make a script... better i guess would be a word?

but i think the most important thing to keep in mind would be, keep it so it could be done in any language. (unlike the programming challenges)

I'd say that it's better if the participants are supposed to write an application for a certain purpose - like an Instant Messenger or a hash cracker.

That's a lot more fun than coding an advanced algorithm imo ^^ B)

I agree... and wow. Good ideas. I have to agree: for us to do something different, it would be the #2 option. Interesting proposal, that one is. Also, I'll check out those links a bit later, Chin. Application-creating competitions are fun as well so, if anyone has more ideas on those, speak up... maybe something will come up that will be interesting to code. Smile

I'll cook up some thoughts on another competition this weekend and reference the ideas placed here... but, until another competition, you do have the theme one to keep you busy for a bit! Start putting in those submissions!

How about automatically returning to the inbox after deleting a PM?

That'd be a nice new feature Smile

Agreed... or after sending / replying / whatever. Looks like there's a partial solution on that for now, though (a link). That's at least better than the blank page. Pfft

Well I haven't said anything in this thread yet, and let me just say that this thread has turned into something great! I can't wait to see a change in this community Grin. One idea that I think would be great is to have real hacking challenges/competitions. On real computers. Nothing simulated. Real hacking. You could turn it into a competition of who finds the most exploits/vulns or whatever. The only problem I foresee is the computers, but I am sure if enough people like the idea it could happen. After all this is hellboundhackers.org .... isn't it Grin.

erm I guess you mean rooting, and by computers you mean vulnerable servers. Anyway it already has been provided by stdio for a little while, however basically only me, jjbutler and maybe couple more people participated, so it went down. It is good idea indeed, it could be adopted in similar way to the rootthisbox.org system, but first you need servers, and who will pay for a 'useless' server

Who says you have to root it. There are plenty of other things you could do. Also hopefully no one will have to pay for the useless servers. Hopefully people will have some they don't use that they could donate. Regardless I think it would be mucho fun.
