RAM: 386 MB

now it's running windows xp, but it's very slow, so i want to ask if theres any linux distro which will run on this laptop better than winxp. thanks.

Personally, For a Spec like That i'd go for 'SimplyMEPIS' or 'Ubuntu'..
I Have no Experiance with SimplyMEPIS, But I Know a Few People That
Have a Similar Spec to You and Use it.
As For Ubuntu, i've Used it Quite a Few Times and i find it Very Useful for
Small Computers, it Runs Reasonably Fast to.

I Hope That Helped Smile

also, try using the xfce window manager instead of gnome, I've heard it is kinder to lower-end systems

pffft.

That's not old.

I'm bootstrapping gentoo on my pentium mmx now.

233 mhz.

Anbyway, stay away from ubuntu and mepis

depending on your experience level i'd say go with debian, mandriva (watch out for speed, use a tweaked kernel and a light WM, i suggest E17), maybe a DSL install?

It all depends on how much experience you have.

If you have very little i suggest Kubuntu or Ubuntu. If you know what your doing Arch Linux would be great. You just need to have enough experience to config it.
