Hello,
There's a tidal wave of information on removing drm from wmv and other
media when you can play the file but I want to know what if you can't play it.
In short, has anyone been able to actually crack drm protected wmv files
without having the license? How is it done?
I googled and read a couple hundred articles but everyone seems to think
it's impossible. I know it's possible but wonder if it's happened yet.
Anybody know?

I know if you can play it you can record it or screen cap and use tools like
tunebite, drmwmv, drmdbg and freeme2. I'm trying to find out if it can
be done when you can't play the file because of drm.
So far the only thing I came up with is using an app like freeme2 and
writing a simple brute forcer for the sid. I'm curious if there's a better
or faster way.

What DRM media have you got? Is there no alternatives? Can you not try and download/buy a non-DRM version?

That's part of the problem. The file has an arbitrary name. Scouring the web returns nothing. Every time I attempt to play the file I am directed to
http://system.protect-media.com/detect.asp
to obtain a license but the page cannot be displayed.
I don't know what it is as I can't open it. It's made me very curious.

Although, considering system.protect-media.com/detect.asp, system.protect-media.com, and protect-media.com all fail, and the domain name times out next month, I wouldn't expect anyone to answer.

I don't know where to find it on the web because I don't know what it is.
I have a copy of it but I have no idea what the original name is, what the content is or where it came from.

What do you mean "it was sent to you" and you're not sure if it's p2p? How did it makes it's way to you're computer?

One of my friends send this on a flash drive via snail mail.
He asked if I could find out what it is. Knowing him it's
probably either run of the mill porn or anime. He gets most
of his stuff via mx/torrent/misc p2p.
I've scanned it with avast and spybot. Couple others as well;
it comes up clean.

Yeah. I sent a message now I'm waiting on a reply.
I wouldn't mind knowing how to get past it though. For kicks if nothing else.
Btw I've also decided to try the bruteforce idea so if I come up with anything
I'll share. Who knows might be useful to someone.

@Phantomchaser, sent you a link with the decode video, Nothing but a bunch of gargled shit. You'll see my file is twice the size of that you sent after removing the protection. I think this was a ploy to get you to buy one of those "players" that play nothing (lots of those on pirate bay) or redirect you for a little something extra for your box.

I got the same thing but I get prompted for the license when I open it.
I did get it through freeme2 by brute forcing it. Still came up with crap.
So the vid is no good.
