Question on installing distro

Alright so currently I have XP Pro and Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my laptop under 3 different partitions.

1 - XP

2 - "/"

3 - swap drive


Now I want to install a different distro ( back track 3 ) onto the ubuntu partition and use its swap drive for back track 3 ( not sure if thats possible ). So i downloaded Back Track 3, burned it to a disk and popped it in and booted from disk. All it did was run all the files necessary to act as a live CD. Maybe I missed an option to reformat a partition(s) and install it on one of them.
