Ok.
I was sitting in english today bored out of my skull and thinking about a convo me and Ricohealey had had the other night. I was asking if he could help myself and a group of friends to write a python scblockedript or two to include in our own hacking OS. But i thought it would be excellent if HbH could bring out there own linux distro. There is several succesful hacking OS's out there BackTrack is the most succesful so far, But some of the big hacking comunities have their own Distro's for example Hacin9 has their own OS... (it kinda blows). But onto the point I would be happy to head up this project and do most of the work, however i would need some artists, brainstormers, Programmers (perl, python etc.) and anyone interested in contributing. I was thinking i would proaly base it on the popular BackTrack2. I would use skype so we could conference throughout the brainstorming phase and im open to suggestions to name. But i would like Cheese's permission on using HBH as an association to this OS and i would like anyone interested in this project to either reply with suggestions or PM me there skype name so we can get in contact.

Hate to tell you, but most people on hbh are too far from the skill level needed to design (debugging, coding, planning, everything) an OS.
Seriously, most people are stuck with javascblockedript and such, how will you ever assemble a team skilled enough to write an OS? |

lol i was mainly thinking jsut re-dubbing a recently built OS and changing little things that we like. Ive done it to my personal OPENSuse i chucked it on a live disc format and added eseential hacking modules and a nice lil splash screen and little tweaks like that. But im mainly thinking from the point of view for getting the hbh name more out there.

Than you aren't creating a "hellbound OS" but just an OS with a mega hbh sticker on it.
Pretty boring if you ask me. |

I think it would be great it would get the word of HBH more out there and to wider communities plus it would advertise for hbh. There could also be extra packages that members could pay for that automated simple tasks for them and etc. Dont be so sceptical just keep an open mind.

backtrack as most live "hacking" distros is essentially slax with a bunch of modules and pretty menus
it wouldn't be that hard, you could just create some topics on what tools should you include, another topic for ppl to submit wallpapers logon screens etc another for external drivers like ipw9045 wich is the intel wi-fi card that comes with the new core 2 duo laptops etc..
and then ask some people to help you put it all together there is enough experience ppl around here they probably wont have time for a full time thing but if you divide tasks and take it slowly it's not impossible..
however as you said backtrack is really good and has almost every tool avaliable for linux.
ours should have some homemade tools and be more fixed towards webhacking, maybe without focusing on wi-fi and other hacking variants you could produce a 128 live version to run of cheap pen drives.
firfox with some extensions wordlists crackers sniffers etc.. maybe a bigger version with metasploit nessus and already configured to save updates to the drive
Rebirth, Lemmingmolester,Xmadx and jcqguill have done it.

Ive had some major developments its incredibly easy to add tools and there is lots of customizations in the forumns that look good for hbh. All i need is a name then production will begin. So i am open to suggestions. And i need Cheeses permission

Add me, ill be happy to help.
And spyware, hbh is not only noobs, theres also very skilled people that can do a good linux live cd. And i think you have not the skills to judge most of us, so stop doubting and start helping, else im sure you can find many others skilled comunities that are good for very skilled persons like you.

It's better to start from an existing distro, otherwise you'll have some serious work. Especially packet manager troubles. |

No no, I wasn't saying that hbh is full of noobs. I was saying that to build an OS (I didn't know about the "edit an existing one" plan at the time of my first post) takes much.
Too much for most people here. You would need incredibly skilled programmers, graphic designers and specialists in all kinds of things.
But now that you guys are editing one, it should be much much easier.
Good luck |

If I understand correctly, you are gonna take an existing distro, remove all unnecessary programs etc, add some programs which a hacker should need (John the ripper, nmap, nessus, ...), change some graphics, you know like the splash screen so it got something on it with HBH.
If your gonna do this you normally still should have the packet manager which is in the distro you started from. At least if I'm correct about what you guys are planning to do. |

its not fair to say hbh is just noobs, i've written a crap OS, all it could do was basic commands, but all in ASM.
and i know people who have programmed directly using the linux kernel, making theyre own linux.
but if its any help, i can have a go with some of it. Lukem_95@hotmail.com

ok santa i'll add you =)
i have two more things to say.
stop bitching about spyware's comment he arealdy took it back and the only point of keeping mentioning it is to make this offtopic and useless..
about the talk of editing and distro or making a new one.
the smart choice is slax slax is:
SLAX is fast and beautiful Linux operating system which fits on small (3.14") CD-ROM disc. It runs directly from the CD (or USB) without installing. The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and uses Unification File System (also known as unionfs), allowing read-only filesystem to behave as a writable one, saving all changes to memory.
they have various versions already made including popcorn and frodo wich are stripped out versions:
SLAX Frodo edition is the console base for all other SLAX releases. It doesn't contain almost anything, only full working Linux command prompt and drivers.
slackware (and slax) have slapt-get which is like apt-get ubuntu has.
dunno if that's what you mean with package manager..
but it's not necessary any slax based distro supports both booting and creating modules:
Additional software for SLAX is provided in the form of compressed modules. The usage is very simple, just add your downloaded module to /modules/ directory on the CD to include it in SLAX permanently, or use "uselivemod" command in SLAX to activate the module on the fly, when the system is running.
so if after hbh live distro is done you still need some specific tool and have space for it on your pen drive just download or create the module (which is easy)
i think it's a great idea and will introduce more people to the fun of having your computer in your pocket.. =)
i have a slax killbill edition on my pen and use it at school instead of they're os. so i can save my work and take it home when im done =)
eek sorry for the long post.. could continue typing for hours..
Rebirth, Lemmingmolester,Xmadx and jcqguill have done it.
