As for rasing money, how about hosting yearly conventions.
It may be a little costly, but this way HBH can really get out there.
Sense the mainstream of HBH is eigther american or from the u.k. you can host alternativley each year (1 year in u.k., and 1 year in u.s.)
Then, how about actually printing the zine, sort of like 2600.
Start an actual little spot for HBH, get yourselves well known.
Ounce your well known u cud possibley get sponcered, or just a crap load of donations.
Renting out a hotel or something for party/conventions here is only like $50 for a day.
Publishing a little booklet is also a good idea. Have like a book with articles written by various hackers that lead from beginners to novices.
although at first u'll be paying more than receaving, if you get a convention going, u cud make tickets like $2.50 or so each.
I know tons of hackers down here in florida that would love to attend a convention but can not travel out of state.
hope this brings up some sort of idea for you guys.

i think its a really great fantasy. Im not doubting the idea, i think its great and i'd love to see it work. but the reality is:
the majority of members on this site are teenagers. there are only a small percentage who are active members and would attend.
Because most members are teenagers, it makes it very unlikely that alot of people would turn up (i.e if we hosted one in london).. alot of people would have finacial trouble in getting to the event.
Same with if its hosted in the US, except thats going to prove greater problems due to exrta distance.
A solution to this could be to submit HBH has speakers etc at various other Hacker related events. i.e DEFCON and 2600 etc etc
This year, if i have enough money(again a big issue) i'll be more than happy to travel any UK hacker gatherings and promote HBH and perhaps give a few talks.

If enough people are willing to attend and stuff, I think it should start as an unofficial 'get together' of members. As they become more popular and scheduled, HBH can adopt them officially and 'sponsor' the event.

i personally am only 13, so i wudnt be able to make it anywhere unless its hosted in florida, seeing as my parents arent going to pay for me to travel to something computer related (they already hate the idea of me being on 24/7 ).
i tried going to DEFCON one time, but parents wudn't let me...
oh well..
it'd be cool if we cud have like all the admins host it somewhere in different areas, me and grind cud host here sense we live only like an hour drive away from each other. this idea coming from Xerox's idea of having small get togethers that are later expanded...

For those who can't attend you could make them pay a fee for a live webcam so everybody could join in. The webcan should be a bit extra so people attend instead of going on their webcam. |

Yeah, or team up with HackThisSite and get a table at defcon- if Xec is willing and they are ginna go for one again this year. I know last year they... erm... "had a table"... lol. OIf course, tables are 300 or so at defcon last I checked.
And I'm planning on going to defcon, a HBH conferance would be great, but again, I think if you teamed up with 3 or four other similar sites, you might even be able to hold a "wargames conferance" or something along those lines?

Damn i needa move to the UK... any hackers in holland? XD
The idea with the magazine sounds pretty good though, would be really good way to get publicity. I'd love to help out with that.
As for sponcers, hackers look bad enough in the media, companys dont wanna get in trouble sponcering us...

problem is there arent enough members who would actually turn up, espicalyl if it isnt near their home.
I might be able to hold some sort of HBH gathering down here in brighton. i got a few ideas on things we could do.
If people are willing to come down into Brighton (UK) then let me know and i'll see about numbers and whether its worth doing. I cant imagine it being very big at all but if your willing to meet 10 - 20 hbh members and have a good time, then sure thing.
possible ideas i had in mind:
- beer
- free WiFi connection
- perhaps mini hacking compeitions within the group.
- urban defacing
- i'll give a couple of lessons about various security related things. varying from easy - advanced. (so theres something for everyone)
- Chatting about computer / hacking related subjects.
So, if a gorup of you are willing to pop down to brighton then you can give me a buz with all your details.. eg, times avaible, rough idea of where you live, age, etc etc.

Anyone from Belgium? Preferably from around Ghent?
Why not start going on some urban defacements in team, to get to know eachother.
I know that last thing sounds 'cocky' but my guess is that if members became 'friends', they would easier decide to go to something like a conferebce cuz they are sure to know others they know personally.
Anyhow, I won't start with organizing something big. Start small and see how many people you receive and evaluate the reactions. And if it's a success, enlarge the event.
