Does anyone know of any good hacking competitions that are free/have a low fee, and either don't require you to go somewhere, or take place in the New England region? Thanks

Hak5 has live security challenges every once and a while. I thought there was one coming up this weekend, however their website doesn't seem to reflect that at the moment.

The guy who won the Facebook "Hacking" Competition, who ironically was from Google, competes here. There might be some lower level stuff, I really haven't looked much into it. However, you should. It looks interesting.
